The Avenger
My first sports car (if you can call it that), was a
fiberglass kit car called "The
Avenger". They were GT-40 look-alikes and were mounted on a VW Bug
chassis.
(The only surviving photos are lousy Polaroid's)
Without getting into a long story, I got this body for
the cost of shipping from Dave Heath of
"Heath Kit Electronics" fame. He was going
to dabble in kit cars until my Dad advised him
against it. Dave cleaned out
the corner of his warehouse and sent it all to me
(oh boy).
I bought a VW
Beetle, pulled the bug body off, and installed the "Avenger"! It looked
so cool (or so I thought at the time); kind of a poor man's Corvette. I dropped the VW engine and rebuilt it with oversize
jugs and pistons. That was fun. Door hinges were a problem for none came with
the body. Dad fashioned a set of sleek, outside-mount door hinges. But other problems started to
become apparent such as windshield wipers, wiring harness, side windows, etc
(sound familiar?).
The last straw was when after buying a pair of "expensive-for-me-at-the-time"
seats, I found my 6'2" frame unable fit in the car. I had to cock my
head against the inner roof! Luckily, I found someone to buy the car
from me,
and I have little doubt that the car ever made it onto the streets.
